Over the weekend, the hubby and I attended a red dress charity event to benefit a heart-healthy organization in our community, sponsored partly by the Junior Leage organization that I am a part of. I searched everywhere for a red dress but couldn't find one that I liked or that fit me (I should have just decided to make it in the first place, but I am stubborn!). So... I finally caved and started looking for patterns. I found a few that I liked, but nothing really stood out to me. I decided to draft the pattern myself and at the eleventh hour, it came together. I was up until 2 am the night before the event!
I was SUPER nervous to cut on the real silk shantung I had purchased from Gail K Fabrics in Atlanta, so it took me a long time and I made certain that the inside was just as pretty as the outside. The dress has princess seaming on the bodice, with stitched-down pleats on the skirt in the front and two darts in the back. I reinforced the bodice with a few pieces of boning in key seam areas (front middle and back darts) and added interlining and lined the bodice in the same silk shantung. The skirt is lined in satin from JoAnn's (also used for the interlining).
What do you think?
